Anchorage, AK – Alaska experienced a surge of seismic activity over the last 24 hours, with 13 earthquakes recorded across the region. A notable 5.0 magnitude earthquake struck approximately 176 kilometers southwest of Nikolski early Wednesday. The tremor, detected at a depth of 35 kilometers, was among the strongest reported during this period.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), seven of the quakes were concentrated near Kaktovik, ranging from magnitudes 3.0 to 3.6. These frequent tremors have raised concerns among residents, though no major damage or injuries have been reported.
The aftershock forecast indicates a 66% likelihood of additional tremors with a magnitude of 3.0 or higher within the next week. The USGS has classified the recent seismic events as reviewed and confirmed, but no tsunami warnings have been issued at this time. Alaska, located along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” frequently experiences seismic activity, highlighting the importance of ongoing monitoring and community preparedness.
