Elfin Cove, Alaska – A shallow magnitude 3.8 earthquake struck offshore west-northwest of Elfin Cove Thursday afternoon, briefly shaking parts of Southeast Alaska but causing no immediate reports of damage or injuries. The quake occurred beneath the Gulf of Alaska region, an area known for frequent seismic activity tied to tectonic plate movement.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake was recorded at a depth of about 1.7 kilometers, making it relatively shallow and more likely to be felt near the epicenter. The shaking was detected roughly 43 kilometers west-northwest of Elfin Cove, a small coastal community in Hoonah-Angoon Census Area. Initial data shows the event was reviewed and confirmed by seismologists shortly after it occurred.

Residents in nearby coastal areas may have noticed a brief jolt or light vibration, especially in buildings or homes close to the shoreline. Local emergency management agencies did not issue tsunami warnings, and officials emphasized that earthquakes of this magnitude rarely cause structural damage in the region.

Southeast Alaska experiences hundreds of small earthquakes each year. Emergency officials encourage residents to remain prepared, secure loose items, and review earthquake safety plans. Authorities continue to monitor the area, and additional updates will be provided if aftershocks or new advisories are issued.
