KODIAK, Alaska – A small earthquake shook parts of southern Alaska late Monday, registering a magnitude 3.0 about 86 kilometers north-northwest of Aleneva, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The tremor struck at 23:30 UTC (2:30 p.m. local time) at a depth of about 60 kilometers beneath the earth’s surface.

According to the Alaska Earthquake Center, the quake originated offshore in a seismically active region northwest of Kodiak Island. No damage or injuries were reported, and no tsunami warnings were issued following the event. Residents in the area did not report feeling significant shaking.

The Kodiak Island region regularly experiences minor quakes due to movement along the Aleutian subduction zone, one of the most active seismic areas in North America. Emergency officials reminded residents that even small tremors serve as a good reminder to review earthquake safety plans and secure household items that could fall during stronger events.

Seismologists will continue monitoring the area for any aftershocks, though none have been recorded so far. The Alaska Earthquake Center advises residents to stay informed through official alerts and reports in the coming days.
