Kodiak, Alaska – Marine conditions remain hazardous along Alaska’s northern Gulf Coast, as gale warnings persist with powerful winds and high seas battering waters from Gore Point to the Barren Islands through Wednesday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Anchorage, west winds of 35 knots are expected tonight and Wednesday, creating seas as high as 10 feet from Gore Point to Marmot Island and along Kamishak Bay. The warnings extend across all major routes, including Cook Inlet and waters surrounding Kodiak Island, with continued 35-knot gusts and waves through Thursday morning.

Vessels navigating near Kodiak Island, the Barren Islands, and Kamishak Bay should expect frequent rough seas and limited visibility. The risk is highest for smaller craft and fishing vessels. Mariners are urged to delay departures, secure gear, and remain in safe harbor until gale warnings expire. Emergency managers recommend monitoring VHF radio for rapid updates and keeping safety equipment ready.

While winds are forecast to gradually decrease Thursday night into Friday, seas will remain rough with northwest gusts up to 25 knots. By the weekend, winds are expected to shift north and ease slightly, but choppy conditions will linger.

Boaters should plan for potential delays, check vessel stability, and prepare for sudden weather changes. Gale warnings remain active until at least late Wednesday, with updates possible as the storm system moves across the Gulf.
