Anchorage, Alaska – Coastal communities across Alaska could have as little as 10 to 15 minutes to reach higher ground after a strong earthquake triggers a tsunami threat.

According to guidance from the National Weather Service and tsunami preparedness officials, hazard zones include low-lying coastal areas across Southcentral Alaska, Kodiak Island, the Alaska Peninsula, and parts of Southeast Alaska. Communities such as Kodiak, Seward, Homer, Valdez, and Sitka face the highest risk, particularly near harbors, bays, and shorelines.

Officials emphasize that strong ground shaking is the immediate warning sign. Residents and visitors in tsunami hazard zones should move inland or to higher ground immediately without waiting for alerts. Tsunami waves can arrive quickly and may continue for hours, increasing danger along the coast.

Key evacuation routes, including coastal highways and local roads, may become limited or congested, especially in smaller communities with fewer access points. Early action is critical in these areas.

Residents are urged to review tsunami hazard maps, identify safe zones in advance, and prepare emergency kits. Additional outreach and alerts may follow as officials continue efforts to improve readiness across Alaska’s coastal regions.
