Anchorage, AK – The National Weather Service has issued multiple Blizzard Warnings across Alaska this weekend, with whiteout conditions, wind gusts up to 60 mph, and life-threatening wind chills as low as 60 below zero expected through Monday in some regions.
According to the National Weather Service in Anchorage and Fairbanks, affected areas include the Northern and Southern Alaska Range, Copper Valley, Kuskokwim Delta, and Thompson Pass, stretching from Bethel to Tok. The warnings remain in effect through Sunday night or Monday afternoon, depending on location.
Forecasters say an arctic air mass continues to surge south through mountain passes, creating intense blowing and drifting snow. Visibility may drop below one-quarter mile at times, with wind chills cold enough to cause frostbite in less than 10 minutes on exposed skin.
Travel is expected to be dangerous or nearly impossible in several regions, including along the Parks, Richardson, and Dalton Highways, where gusty winds and heavy snow could lead to whiteout conditions. Officials urge residents to avoid nonessential travel, keep winter survival kits in vehicles, and stay with vehicles if stranded.
The extreme cold will persist through the weekend, with gradual improvement expected by Monday as winds begin to subside.
