Alachua County, FL – A convicted felon was arrested Tuesday night after deputies say a domestic dispute in southwest Alachua County escalated into a violent assault involving strangulation and a firearm.
According to the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded Tuesday evening to the 2600 block of Southwest 75th Street, near Gainesville, following a report of a battery. Investigators said the victim told deputies the dispute began verbally but turned physical earlier in the day, when 29-year-old Marquis Tippins allegedly attempted to strangle them.
Deputies said the victim also reported a separate recent incident in which Tippins allegedly threatened them by holding a gun to their head. Law enforcement observed injuries that deputies said were consistent with the victim’s account.
Authorities later located Tippins nearby and detained him for questioning. According to deputies, Tippins admitted to prior felony convictions out of Georgia and was previously sentenced for theft and simple assault.
A search of Tippins’ person reportedly uncovered a loaded revolver with a removed serial number, along with more than 85 grams of marijuana, a digital scale, and ammunition. Deputies said Tippins does not have a medical marijuana card.
Following the investigation, Tippins was arrested and charged with aggravated battery, possession of a firearm with a mutilated serial number, use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of marijuana over 20 grams, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon.
The incident occurred in Alachua County, within the Gainesville metropolitan area of North Central Florida. The case remains under investigation, and no further details about the victim were released.
