Birmingham, Alabama – A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for parts of north-central Alabama due to the potential for dangerous ice and snow accumulation later this week.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, the watch is in effect from Friday evening, Jan. 23, through Sunday afternoon, Jan. 25, 2026, for Blount, Cherokee, Etowah, Fayette, Lamar, Marion, Walker, and Winston counties.
Forecasters say heavy mixed precipitation is possible, including ice accumulation exceeding one-quarter inch, along with snow and sleet totals up to 2 inches in some areas. The combination of ice and snow could lead to extensive tree damage and power outages lasting more than a day.
Travel conditions may deteriorate rapidly as precipitation develops. The National Weather Service warns that travel could become impossible, particularly during periods of heavier ice accumulation. Roads, bridges, and overpasses are expected to be especially hazardous.
Residents are urged to closely monitor forecast updates as confidence increases on precipitation type and amounts. Those who must travel are advised to use extreme caution and consider carrying a winter storm kit, including blankets, extra clothing, water, a flashlight, and emergency supplies in case of becoming stranded.
Power disruptions are a significant concern if ice totals exceed forecast thresholds, as ice-laden tree limbs and power lines may fail. Utilities and emergency management agencies across the region are expected to prepare for potential response operations.
This system may have impacts on weekend travel, work schedules, and school activities, particularly for commuters and students across affected counties.
The National Weather Service emphasized that details may change as the event approaches and encouraged residents to remain weather-aware through the weekend.
