Alabama — The morning feels calm across north Alabama, but the air already carries a sharper edge. Damp pavement glistens under cloud cover, and colder wind sneaks in between passing showers. For now, it’s manageable. That won’t last.

Rain lingers through today, with temperatures climbing into the mid-50s. By tonight, clouds stay thick and roads remain wet. Thursday offers a brief lull, but colder air pushes in by evening. That transition sets the stage for a high-impact winter event.

A Winter Storm Watch is now in effect from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon for Huntsville and much of north Alabama. Meteorologists warn that moderate to heavy accumulations of snow, sleet, and ice are increasingly likely. Travel impacts could escalate quickly.

Rain may mix with sleet Friday evening, then change to freezing rain and snow overnight. Snow and sleet totals of 2 to 3 inches are possible, with ice accumulations exceeding one-quarter inch. Locally higher amounts cannot be ruled out. That much ice can snap tree limbs and trigger scattered power outages.

Saturday brings the greatest concern. Wintry precipitation may continue through the day as temperatures hover near freezing. Even minor warming could melt snow briefly, only to refreeze after sunset. Flash freezing may turn untreated roads slick within minutes. Travel could become impossible in spots, especially on bridges and elevated roadways.

Conditions slowly improve Sunday, but lingering snow and freezing rain remain possible into the morning. Cold air sticks around into early next week.

Looking ahead, the 6–10 day outlook keeps much of the Southeast colder than normal, while additional precipitation chances return across the central U.S.
