Alabama skies are bright and mild late this morning, but rain is lining up fast across Huntsville. Temperatures are already in the 60s and will peak near 68 degrees this afternoon before showers and a few thunderstorms move in by evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, showers become likely after 4 p.m., with rain chances climbing to 70% tonight. Rainfall totals between a tenth and a quarter inch are expected, with higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Wet pavement could slow traffic along I-565 after sunset.

Winds turn north after midnight as cooler air filters in. Lows fall to 49 degrees by early Saturday. A few lingering showers remain possible Saturday morning before skies gradually brighten. Highs still reach 65 degrees, but a noticeable chill follows after dark.

Saturday night drops to 33 degrees under partly cloudy skies. Sunday turns sunny but cooler, with highs near 48 and northwest winds gusting to 25 mph.

Then comes the hard freeze.

Clear skies Sunday night allow temperatures to plunge to 24 degrees. Any moisture left on bridges or overpasses could refreeze, creating patchy slick spots for early Monday commuters. Late February often brings flash freezing when daytime thawing gives way to sharp nighttime drops.
