Alabama skies over the Tennessee Valley feel unsettled this morning. Low clouds hang over Huntsville while breezy winds begin building ahead of a fast-moving spring storm system.
Those winds will strengthen through the afternoon and evening. Rain and possible thunderstorms could follow before a sharp cold snap settles in.
According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, a Wind Advisory remains in effect from 1 p.m. today through 7 a.m. Monday across north-central and northeast Alabama. Southwest winds between 15 and 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected across the region.
Communities including Huntsville, Decatur, Florence, Athens, and Scottsboro could see the strongest gusts later today.
Drivers traveling along Interstate 565, Interstate 65, and U.S. 72 may notice sudden crosswinds, especially on open bridges and elevated roadways. Secure loose outdoor items before midday as gusty winds increase.
Rain becomes more widespread tonight, with a few thunderstorms possible. Some storms may produce heavy rainfall and brief bursts of stronger wind.
Cooler air follows quickly behind the storm system. Temperatures fall sharply Monday with highs struggling to reach the low 40s.
A Freeze Watch is already posted Monday evening through Tuesday morning, with overnight lows expected to drop to around 25°F in the Huntsville area. Sensitive plants and early spring vegetation could suffer damage if left uncovered.
Gardeners should cover plants and check exposed outdoor pipes before the temperature plunge.
By St. Patrick’s Day Tuesday, sunshine returns but the morning will feel brisk across north Alabama.
Temperatures rebound steadily midweek as spring warmth rebuilds across the Tennessee Valley.
