Cold air grips North Alabama this morning as patchy freezing fog settles across valleys and open fields. In Huntsville, the temperature dipped to 29°F, coating cars and windshields in a thin layer of frost before sunrise. Calm winds and clear skies have allowed temperatures to fall fast — creating slick spots for early drivers, particularly on I-565, U.S. 72, and bridges along the Tennessee River.

According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, patchy freezing fog will lift after 8 a.m., leading to mostly sunny skies and a high near 50°F. Winds will shift southwest by mid-morning, ushering in warmer air that continues into Wednesday, when highs reach the upper 50s. By Thursday, a weak front brings slightly cooler air, holding highs around 49°F, with chilly lows near 34°F overnight.

Meteorologists say this stretch represents Alabama’s typical early-December “weather flip” — cold mornings, mild afternoons, and occasional fog. The pattern may persist through the weekend before another temperature dip arrives early next week. Meanwhile, a stronger Arctic system is expected to hammer the Midwest and Great Lakes between December 11–17, sending a surge of cold air southeast that could eventually reach the Tennessee Valley.

Residents should use the midweek warmth to prepare for colder nights ahead. Check vehicle fluids, wrap outdoor faucets, and drive carefully through low-visibility areas this morning.
