Alabama greets the morning with a cold bite in the air and thick clouds sliding over Huntsville as moisture builds to the southwest. At 33 degrees earlier, the chill lingered, but temperatures are climbing quickly and rain is lining up for later today into Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, skies remain mostly cloudy with a high near 62 degrees. Showers develop mainly after 4 a.m. tonight, with rain chances rising to 80%. By Sunday, showers become widespread with a 100% chance of rain and highs near 63. Rainfall totals between a quarter and half inch are possible. Southeast winds increase to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph before shifting northeast.

Drivers along I-565, Memorial Parkway and Highway 72 should prepare for slick pavement and reduced visibility during heavier showers. Ponding water could slow traffic late in the day and into Sunday morning. While temperatures stay well above freezing, this is the season when rapid cooling after rain can create isolated slick spots on elevated bridges. Stay alert during early Monday travel.

Rain tapers Sunday night with lows near 47. Washington’s Birthday turns mostly sunny with a high near 68, launching a mild President’s Day week. Tuesday reaches 71, and Wednesday climbs to 73 under mostly cloudy skies.

That warming trend places north Alabama 10 to 20 degrees above normal through much of next week. February is ending on a warm note, with spring vibes building across the Tennessee Valley.
