HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – A calm, clear sky early this morning hides what’s coming — a dramatic weekend weather shift that could end with the first flakes of the season for parts of North Alabama. Mild breezes and mid-70s warmth will linger through Saturday, but a strong cold front arriving late Sunday brings a sharp reality check: winter is knocking early.
According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, scattered rain showers and a few rumbles of thunder are expected late Friday into Saturday morning as moisture builds ahead of the front. After a break in the clouds Saturday, the front races in Sunday afternoon, bringing temperatures down nearly 25 degrees by nightfall. As that cold air deepens, forecasters say a brief rain-to-snow changeover is possible late Sunday night—especially across higher terrain in Madison, Jackson, and Marshall counties.
While little to no accumulation is expected, the early-season mix could create slick bridges and brief visibility issues for late-night drivers along I-565 and I-65 north of Decatur. Temperatures by Monday morning will plunge into the upper 20s, with wind chills in the teens—marking the coldest air of the season so far.
Residents are urged to protect sensitive plants, wrap exposed pipes, and bring pets indoors before the front arrives. Gusty northwest winds Sunday evening could also bring down a few remaining leaves, making wet roads slippery through early Monday.
Veterans Day should feature bright skies and chilly air, with highs near 45°F before a gradual warm-up later next week. For now, it’s a weekend of weather whiplash—one that may come with North Alabama’s first hint of snow.
