Mobile, Alabama – Spring break travelers heading to Alabama’s Gulf Coast may be surprised by a chilly start to the mornings as a cold front drops temperatures near 41°F between March 16 and March 20 across the Mobile area.

The cooler air arriving behind the front could bring brisk early mornings to coastal Alabama during the opening days of astronomical spring, especially for visitors expecting warmer Gulf Coast conditions.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a large section of the eastern United States—from Minnesota down to East Texas and eastward to the Atlantic coast—shows a 60–70% probability of below-normal temperatures during that period. The colder air mass is expected to push deep into the Southeast as the front moves south.

Cities along the central Gulf Coast including Mobile, Daphne, and Fairhope may see overnight temperatures dipping to around 41°F, particularly during clear nights when cooler air settles in behind the front.

Daytime highs are expected to rebound into the 60s, but those readings will still run below typical mid-March averages for southern Alabama.

Drivers traveling along Interstate 10 and Interstate 65 during spring break should prepare for cooler early-morning conditions, particularly near coastal areas where breezes off Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico may add an extra chill.

Visitors heading to Gulf Shores, Dauphin Island, and Orange Beach should plan for jacket weather during early mornings and evenings before temperatures warm during the afternoon.

The cooler pattern may persist through March 20, and additional updates could follow if the cold air mass continues pushing farther south across the Gulf Coast during the first official week of spring.
