Montgomery, AL – Drivers across central and eastern Alabama are waking up to hazardous travel conditions Wednesday morning as freezing fog blankets much of the region. The National Weather Service in Birmingham issued a Freezing Fog Advisory effective until 8 a.m. CST, warning of visibility reduced to a quarter mile or less in several counties.
According to the National Weather Service, the advisory includes Autauga, Barbour, Bullock, Chambers, Chilton, Clay, Cleburne, Coosa, Dallas, Elmore, Lee, Lowndes, Macon, Montgomery, Pike, Randolph, Russell, and Tallapoosa Counties. The fog is expected to dissipate shortly after sunrise as temperatures rise above freezing.
Officials caution that frost formation on bridges and overpasses may create slick spots, even where main roadways appear clear. Commuters are urged to slow down, use headlights, and increase following distance during the morning drive.
The freezing fog follows a stretch of chilly overnight lows across central Alabama, with temperatures near or below 32 degrees in several locations. Conditions should improve later this morning as the sun lifts and winds increase.
Motorists are advised to check local traffic updates before leaving home and report any hazardous road conditions to local authorities.
