HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Morning commuters across north Alabama are facing a gray, soupy start as dense fog blankets valleys and low-lying areas from the Tennessee border south through the Huntsville metro. Headlights shimmer through the mist, and traffic is moving cautiously on I-565 and Highway 72.

According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 8 AM CST Friday for portions of north-central and northeastern Alabama, as well as southern middle Tennessee. Visibility could drop below a quarter mile at times, creating hazardous travel before sunrise. Drivers should use low beams, slow down, and leave extra space on slick pavement.

As the fog lifts, attention turns to the sky. A weak front sliding through the region will bring scattered showers and a few isolated thunderstorms later today, followed by gradual clearing into Saturday. Temperatures will remain mild, with highs in the lower 70s.

The weekend looks calm and pleasant, with sunshine returning Sunday — perfect timing as Thanksgiving travel begins to ramp up across the South. By Monday and Tuesday, forecasters expect another system to develop to the west, bringing the chance for heavier rain and gusty winds ahead of a cooler air mass settling in midweek.

Across the nation, a colder, stormier setup is taking shape, with 3 to 6 inches of snow possible across parts of the Midwest and Great Lakes between November 25 and December 3. Alabama won’t see snow yet, but cooler temperatures are likely by Thanksgiving Day.

For now, Alabamians should watch for fog delays this morning and prepare for a damp, breezy transition into the holiday week.
