Montgomery, Ala. – Drivers across central and eastern Alabama are waking up to dangerous travel conditions this morning as dense fog reduces visibility to less than half a mile. The National Weather Service has issued a Dense Fog Advisory in effect until 9 a.m. Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, the advisory includes more than 20 counties, stretching from Etowah and Calhoun in the north to Barbour and Pike in the southeast. Cities such as Montgomery, Auburn, Opelika, Troy, and Selma are under the advisory, with patchy fog also reported along major highways including I-65, I-85, and U.S. 231.
Transportation officials warn that morning commuters could face sudden drops in visibility, particularly on rural roadways and near rivers or low-lying areas. Drivers are urged to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and maintain extra space between vehicles.
The advisory is expected to expire by 9 a.m. as fog lifts with daytime heating, but officials caution that similar conditions may develop again overnight into Sunday.
