Montgomery, Alabama – Alabama is bracing for another sweltering stretch as a dangerous heat wave sends the heat index soaring up to 107 degrees across dozens of counties through 9 p.m. Thursday. Residents in Montgomery, Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Auburn, and beyond should prepare for potentially life-threatening heat illnesses if precautions aren’t taken.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, the Heat Advisory now covers most of central and eastern Alabama—including Cherokee, Cleburne, Talladega, Lee, Russell, and Barbour Counties. Heat index values between 106 and 107 degrees are expected, creating hazardous conditions for anyone outdoors or without access to air conditioning.
Specific cities under advisory include Montgomery, Hoover, Auburn, Tuscaloosa, Prattville, Opelika, and Phenix City. High humidity will compound the heat, pushing “feels like” temperatures well into the danger zone. Utilities may see higher demand as families seek relief indoors. Outdoor workers and athletes should schedule activities in the early morning or evening, take frequent shaded breaks, and hydrate continuously.
Young children, the elderly, and pets are at greatest risk. Never leave anyone unattended in vehicles, and check on neighbors. Consider rescheduling strenuous activities, and wear light, loose clothing. This event echoes past late-July Alabama heatwaves that have caused power outages and sent dozens to hospitals.
The heat threat will persist into Thursday night, with another update expected if advisories are extended or upgraded. Warnings remain in effect for nearly all central Alabama counties.
