Birmingham, Ala. – Extreme heat will grip Alabama starting this weekend, with temperatures in the low to mid-90s and heat indices soaring to near 105° by early next week.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, a broad stretch of central Alabama — including cities like Tuscaloosa, Montgomery, and Anniston — will see highs in the mid-90s beginning Saturday. Heat indices will hover near 100° through Sunday, before climbing toward dangerous levels Monday through Wednesday. The risk of heat-related illness is expected to shift from low to moderate over the weekend and rise to a moderate to major risk early next week.
Communities such as Selma, Gadsden, and Troy are forecast to hit 94° to 97° during peak afternoons, with heat index values up to 105°. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity during peak heat, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable individuals.
The Alabama Department of Public Health advises using fans or air conditioning, wearing light clothing, and never leaving pets or children in vehicles.
Heat risks remain elevated through at least Wednesday. Additional heat advisories may be issued in coming days.
