Birmingham, Ala. – Drivers and residents across Central Alabama face the risk of damaging winds up to 60 mph through 10 p.m. Friday, as strong thunderstorms push across the region. Gusty winds may lead to downed trees, isolated power outages, and hazardous travel conditions in cities like Birmingham, Montgomery, and Tuscaloosa.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe storms remains in effect for all of Central Alabama, including Jasper, Selma, Alex City, and Clanton. The main concern is wind gusts strong enough to cause property damage and make driving hazardous—especially on I-65, I-20, and I-59 corridors during the evening commute.
Residents are urged to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts and be ready to move to a sturdy shelter if warnings are issued. Secure outdoor items, charge cell phones, and avoid unnecessary travel if possible. While tornadoes are not expected, straight-line winds can cause just as much harm—especially to trees and power lines.
This is the first widespread severe weather risk in August for the region, but conditions may change quickly. Stay tuned to local updates, as additional advisories or alerts may be issued tonight. Severe weather risk will taper off after 10 p.m., but pockets of strong winds may linger into the overnight hours.
