Birmingham, Ala. – Dangerous heat and the threat of severe storms are converging across central Alabama today, with damaging wind gusts and heat indices topping 109°F expected through 10 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, a Level 2 severe weather risk is in effect for much of central Alabama from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday. Cities including Montgomery, Clanton, Alex City, and Auburn are most at risk for wind gusts up to 60 mph, which could down trees and cause power outages during afternoon and evening storms.
In addition, a Heat Advisory remains in effect for all of central Alabama, with actual temperatures climbing to 94–98°F and heat indices peaking near 109°F. The dangerous heat is expected to intensify by early afternoon before storms move in.
Residents in Tuscaloosa, Selma, and Demopolis may see brief relief from the heat once storms develop but should prepare for potential flash outages and falling limbs. Utility crews are on standby, and emergency officials urge residents to stay indoors, hydrate regularly, and ensure access to sturdy shelter in case warnings are issued.
Warnings remain possible through this evening as storms roll southeast. Another update will be issued by the NWS if conditions escalate.
