Birmingham, Alabama – Severe thunderstorms could lash Central Alabama beginning Monday morning, with straight-line winds and isolated tornadoes posing a risk to residents from Tuscaloosa to Auburn. Gusts up to 60 mph and quarter-size hail may make travel hazardous and cause scattered power outages through the evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, a Level 2 (slight) risk for severe storms is in place across much of the state on Monday, June 9. The greatest concerns are damaging wind gusts, brief tornadoes, and hail, with multiple rounds of storms expected to track across the region between sunrise and sunset.

Cities including Birmingham, Montgomery, Anniston, and Selma fall under the elevated risk zone. Residents are urged to secure outdoor objects, review shelter plans, and keep mobile alerts enabled. Travel could be impacted on major routes like I-20, I-65, and US-82 during storm bursts.

This pattern continues a week-long trend of unstable conditions, with more storms possible through midweek. While this system is not expected to be as intense as some spring outbreaks, it could still disrupt commutes, summer activities, and power reliability.

Storm watches or warnings may be issued with little notice. Stay weather-aware and monitor updates at weather.gov/bmx.
