Birmingham, Alabama – Periods of heavy rain and strong thunderstorms could create hazardous travel and flooding concerns across Central Alabama beginning Friday afternoon and lasting into Friday night as a slow-moving storm system pushes through the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, much of Central Alabama is under a Level 2 out of 5 risk for severe weather on Friday. Storms are expected to intensify through the afternoon and evening hours, with damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph, large hail up to quarter size, and isolated, brief tornadoes possible. At the same time, a Level 2 excessive rainfall risk highlights the potential for flash flooding, especially across northwest and west-central portions of the state.

Communities including Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Jasper, Hamilton, Clanton, and Demopolis could see repeated rounds of heavy rainfall, with totals ranging from 1 to 3 inches and locally higher amounts. Poor drainage areas, low-lying roads, and urban streets may flood quickly during heavier downpours. Interstate corridors such as I-20/59, I-65, and Highway 22 could see reduced visibility and ponding on roadways.

Residents are urged to clear storm drains, avoid driving through flooded roads, and ensure multiple ways to receive weather alerts. Conditions may change rapidly, and additional warnings could be issued as storms develop Friday afternoon and evening.
