Birmingham, Alabama – Gusty winds moving across central Alabama Sunday will be followed by a sharp drop in temperatures that could bring a damaging freeze to the region by late Monday night into Tuesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, a Wind Advisory is in effect from 1 p.m. Sunday until 1 p.m. Monday across central Alabama. Southwest winds of 10 to 20 mph with gusts reaching 40 mph could blow around unsecured outdoor items, break tree limbs, and cause isolated power outages.
Cities including Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Montgomery, Auburn, Selma, Anniston, and Gadsden may see the strongest gusts Sunday afternoon through early Monday. Drivers on major routes such as Interstate 20, Interstate 65, and Interstate 85 should use extra caution, especially in high-profile vehicles.
Behind the windy conditions, colder air will settle across the region. A Freeze Warning is in effect from 10 p.m. Monday until 10 a.m. Tuesday, when temperatures could fall to around 24°F.
That level of cold could damage early spring vegetation and freeze exposed pipes. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items Sunday and protect plants, pets, and plumbing before temperatures plunge Monday night.
