Birmingham, AL – A widespread severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect across central and northern Alabama through 12 p.m. CDT Monday, impacting more than 4 million residents. The system threatens damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes throughout key population centers including Birmingham, Huntsville, Montgomery, and Tuscaloosa.

According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, the watch spans 44 counties statewide, with potential for gusts reaching up to 70 mph and isolated hailstones as large as ping pong balls. A couple of tornadoes are also possible during the watch period.

Cities under the watch include Anniston, Gadsden, Jasper, and Albertville. Schools and early morning commutes may be affected due to rapidly changing conditions. The storm could impact 1,343 schools and over 100 hospitals, per the alert data.

Residents are urged to remain indoors during warnings, secure loose outdoor objects, and monitor local alerts. Charge mobile devices in case of power outages. Avoid travel where possible until the threat clears midday.

This storm system marks a volatile start to the week, with Alabama’s early spring season historically prone to severe weather outbreaks. Officials continue to monitor conditions for any upgrades to tornado or severe thunderstorm warnings.
