Birmingham, Alabama – Strong north winds could push unsecured objects across central Alabama this afternoon before temperatures plunge overnight, setting up frost that may damage outdoor plants by early Friday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. Thursday for much of central and western Alabama. Sustained winds of 5 to 15 mph with gusts reaching 30 mph could snap small limbs and cause isolated power outages across counties including Jefferson, Tuscaloosa, Shelby, and Walker.
Drivers along Interstate 65 through Birmingham and I-20/59 near Tuscaloosa may encounter sudden crosswinds during the afternoon commute. High-profile vehicles such as box trucks and RVs will feel the strongest impacts, especially on elevated bridges and open stretches of highway.
Conditions calm tonight, but colder air quickly settles across the region. A Frost Advisory takes effect at 1 a.m. Friday and continues until 10 a.m., with temperatures falling to around 36°F in cities including Birmingham, Anniston, Clanton, Selma, and Jasper.
Gardeners should cover sensitive plants or bring potted vegetation indoors before midnight to avoid frost damage. Officials say additional cold-weather alerts could be issued if temperatures drop further before sunrise Friday.
