Montgomery, Ala. – Severe thunderstorms could bring damaging winds, large hail, and dangerous lightning to central Alabama through 8 p.m. Friday, with cities like Montgomery, Auburn, and Opelika in the impact zone.

According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for 11 Alabama counties, including Bullock, Elmore, Lee, Macon, Montgomery, and Tallapoosa. The watch, issued at 12:55 p.m. EDT, remains active until 8 p.m.

Storms could affect afternoon and evening commutes along major routes such as I-85 and U.S. Highway 231. Sudden downpours and wind gusts over 60 mph are possible, increasing the risk of downed trees and scattered power outages. Outdoor plans and high school sports may be disrupted in areas like Russell and Chambers counties.

Residents are urged to stay weather-aware, charge mobile devices, and avoid open fields or tall trees during thunderstorms. If under a warning, seek shelter indoors immediately.

This watch may be upgraded to warnings as storms intensify. Updates are expected throughout the afternoon and evening.
