Birmingham, Alabama – A fast-moving line of severe thunderstorms is hammering central Alabama this morning, with 80 mph wind gusts and hail threatening homes and roadways across Jefferson, Shelby, and Bibb counties through 7 a.m. CDT.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, the most intense storm cell was over Abernant at 6:17 a.m., racing east at 65 mph. Officials have issued a “destructive” threat level for this storm, warning of widespread wind damage and dangerous flying debris. A second severe thunderstorm is also tracking through Clay, Coosa, and Talladega counties with 60 mph winds and quarter-sized hail.
Communities at highest risk include Helena, Calera, Sylacauga, and Lineville. Damage to roofs, vehicles, and trees is likely, and mobile homes face a significant risk of structural damage. Continuous cloud-to-ground lightning is also reported across the region.
Residents are urged to take immediate shelter in an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Charge devices and avoid travel until the threat clears.
Warnings remain in effect until at least 7 a.m., with additional advisories possible as the storm line continues eastward.
