HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – A round of strong to severe thunderstorms could sweep across north Alabama and southern middle Tennessee Friday evening into early Saturday morning, bringing the risk of damaging wind gusts and brief heavy rain. The National Weather Service in Huntsville said the primary concern is for strong wind gusts capable of knocking down tree limbs and power lines.
According to the NWS Huntsville office, the area north of I-20 — including Florence, Decatur, Athens, and Fayetteville, Tennessee — sits under a Level 2 “Slight Risk” for severe weather. Thunderstorms are expected to develop late Friday evening and continue overnight as a cold front moves through the Tennessee Valley. While confidence remains medium for wind damage, the risk of flooding or hail appears low.
Officials urge residents to review nighttime severe weather plans now, as storms may strike while many are asleep. Make sure weather radios are charged, phones are not set to “Do Not Disturb,” and multiple alert methods are active. If you live in a mobile home, identify a safer shelter option in advance.
Motorists traveling on I-65, I-565, or U.S. 72 should watch for sudden heavy downpours and gusty crosswinds late Friday. Outdoor events Friday evening should have contingency plans in place. The system will clear out early Saturday, bringing a cooler and breezier weekend.
