Huntsville, Alabama – Storms and sweltering humidity will hammer north Alabama starting Sunday, July 20, as thunderstorm chances rise and heat index values climb past 100°. Sunday afternoon brings the highest risk of weather-related disruptions, especially along U.S. Route 72 and I-565 corridors.

According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, there’s a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 p.m. Sunday. Skies will be partly sunny with highs near 91°F, but the heat index could spike to 103°F. Winds will remain light out of the west-southwest, offering little relief. Rain totals may exceed a quarter inch during thunderstorms.

Localized flooding and road slicks are possible during heavy downpours, especially near low-lying areas and poorly drained intersections. Residents should monitor NOAA alerts, avoid unnecessary travel during storms, and remain hydrated throughout the week.

The rest of the week sees classic Southern summer conditions: muggy heat in the mid-90s with scattered thunderstorm chances every afternoon through Friday. Tuesday and Friday bring a 30–40% chance of afternoon storms, with highs near 96°F both days.

While nighttime temps offer mild relief, dipping into the mid-70s, power usage may rise as residents rely on air conditioning to combat the heat.

Stay weather-aware and plan outdoor activities early in the day or after sunset.
