Huntsville, Alabama – Severe thunderstorms packing damaging winds, large hail, and a tornado threat are expected to hit the Tennessee Valley late Tuesday afternoon, with the greatest danger unfolding between 4 p.m. and midnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, all of northern Alabama and parts of southern middle Tennessee are under a Level 3 (Enhanced) risk for severe weather from Tuesday into early Wednesday. The storm window runs through midnight, but isolated storms may persist into the overnight hours.

Cities like Decatur, Florence, and Scottsboro should prepare for potentially dangerous conditions. Straight-line winds over 60 mph, isolated tornadoes, and hail the size of quarters or larger could damage homes, down trees, and disrupt power lines. Huntsville’s evening commute and outdoor events could be impacted as the first storm cells develop.

Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, charge devices now, and have multiple ways to receive alerts—especially overnight. Tornado warnings may come with little lead time after dark.

Storms should taper off by sunrise Wednesday, but additional watches or warnings remain possible if new cells redevelop. Stay weather-aware and check for updates from NWS Huntsville.
