Huntsville, Ala. – Drivers across north Alabama are facing dangerous travel conditions early this morning as very low cloud ceilings and patchy dense fog cut visibility to less than a quarter-mile in spots. Roadways may remain hazardous until after daybreak.

According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, improvement in visibility is not expected until the early morning sun begins to burn off the fog. Commuters in Madison, Limestone, and surrounding counties are urged to slow down, keep headlights on low beam, and allow extra space between vehicles.

Major routes, including Interstate 565, U.S. Highway 72, and Alabama Highway 53, could see significant slowdowns as drivers navigate through dense fog banks. Motorists should allow more time for travel and avoid abrupt lane changes, as sudden pockets of near-zero visibility are possible.

Officials advise using caution on rural roads and bridges, where fog can linger longer in low-lying areas. Conditions are expected to improve steadily after sunrise, but patchy fog may return late tonight in some areas.
