Birmingham, Alabama – Thunderstorms are expected to intensify across northern Alabama today and into Sunday night, potentially soaking Memorial Day plans with widespread showers and storms from Hamilton to Gadsden.

According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, the highest storm chances today will stretch across the northern half of the state, with temperatures climbing into the mid-80s north to near 90°F in the southern counties. Storm activity will be most widespread tonight, especially in cities like Jasper, Anniston, and Birmingham, where lows will dip into the mid-60s.

By Memorial Day, showers and storms could linger across much of central and northern Alabama. Cities like Montgomery, Selma, and Tuscaloosa may still see highs near 90°F, but increased cloud cover and intermittent rain may limit outdoor celebrations. Roads could be slick during travel times, particularly on I-65 and I-20 corridors.

Residents are advised to monitor for potential lightning, gusty winds, and brief downpours. If attending outdoor events, have a backup shelter plan and avoid flooded roadways.

Rain chances will taper off slightly by late Monday, but more updates may follow if additional storm systems develop into early next week.
