Birmingham, Ala. – Central Alabama residents could feel temperatures as high as 105°F Monday afternoon as dangerous heat index values blanket the region. The National Weather Service has issued a moderate heat risk alert, urging residents to limit outdoor exposure and take precautions.

According to the US National Weather Service in Birmingham, heat index values will climb between 100–105°F across cities including Birmingham, Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, Auburn, Gadsden, and Demopolis. Actual highs will range from 90–96°F, with the most intense heat expected between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.

The heat risk is classified as moderate, meaning people sensitive to heat—like the elderly, children, and those without access to air conditioning—are especially vulnerable. Officials recommend drinking water frequently, avoiding strenuous outdoor activity, and checking on elderly neighbors.

Children and pets should never be left in parked cars, even for a few minutes. Lightweight, breathable clothing and shaded areas can help reduce the risk of heat-related illness.

Temperatures will ease slightly overnight, but hot conditions persist through midweek, with more advisories possible if humidity levels rise.
