Huntsville, Alabama – Triple-digit heat index values are expected to settle over north Alabama this weekend, creating dangerous conditions that could last through at least Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, heat index values will climb above 100°F beginning Sunday, with the most intense heat forecast for Monday and Tuesday, when it could feel as hot as 105°F. High temperatures will range from 89°F to 95°F across the region, with low temperatures remaining in the humid 70s.
Cities like Decatur, Athens, and Florence will experience prolonged heat stress, particularly during afternoon hours. Vulnerable populations — including young children, older adults, pregnant women, and those with chronic illnesses — are at highest risk. Health officials urge residents to recognize signs of heat exhaustion and avoid outdoor activity during peak hours.
Hydration, access to air conditioning, and checking on neighbors are essential safety steps. Never leave pets or people inside parked vehicles, even briefly. Light-colored, breathable clothing can also help reduce risk.
This is the first prolonged heat event of the season for the Tennessee Valley. More advisories may follow as temperatures remain elevated through midweek.
