Birmingham, Alabama – Scorching heat will grip much of Alabama starting Friday, with heat indices pushing as high as 105°F in several cities by Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, a hot and humid air mass is replacing this week’s soggy pattern. High temperatures in the lower to mid-90s, combined with oppressive humidity, will create dangerous conditions for outdoor workers, children, pets, and those without air conditioning. The heat will build through the weekend and linger into early next week.
Cities including Birmingham, Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, and Anniston could see maximum heat index values over 100°F daily through at least Monday. The NWS warns of moderate to major risk of heat-related illness, especially for heat-sensitive individuals and those without access to cooling.
Residents are urged to stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and avoid outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours. Never leave children or pets in vehicles, even briefly—car interiors can become deadly in minutes. Pet owners should also avoid hot pavement and ensure animals have shade and water.
Heat safety reminders remain in effect through Monday, with additional advisories possible as conditions evolve.
