Tallahassee, Fla. – Persistent dry and breezy weather is putting Alabama and parts of Georgia at risk for rapid-onset drought and increasing fire danger through late September. Warm temperatures combined with parched soils are quickly raising concern across the Tri-State region.

According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, recent conditions have left vegetation dry and highly flammable, and with little rainfall in sight, fire weather threats are expected to climb steadily in the coming days. Alabama and western Georgia are most at risk as winds continue to pick up.

Communities including Montgomery, Dothan, and Columbus could see fire risks increase as early as this weekend, with officials urging residents to avoid outdoor burning. Local forestry agencies advise clearing brush away from homes, keeping water sources handy, and heeding any burn bans that may be issued.

Travelers along I-10 and I-85 may also encounter smoky conditions if wildfires break out, potentially reducing visibility. Emergency managers recommend drivers keep headlights on and allow for extra time on rural routes.

Fire weather concerns are expected to linger into late September, with the Climate Prediction Center warning that drought expansion is likely without meaningful rainfall. More advisories are possible in the coming week.
