Huntsville, AL – A widespread freeze is set to grip much of the Southeast within hours, with temperatures dropping below freezing as early as 9 p.m. and lasting through the Wednesday morning commute, putting crops, plumbing, and travel at risk across four states.
According to the National Weather Service, Freeze Warnings stretch from northern Alabama through Georgia and into parts of Florida and South Carolina, with lows ranging from 22°F in Georgia to near 30°F along the Gulf Coast. The coldest window will occur between midnight and 8 a.m. Wednesday, with multiple alerts aligned during peak overnight hours.
In Alabama, cities including Huntsville, Birmingham, and Montgomery could see temperatures fall to 27–28°F, while Georgia faces even colder air with 22°F possible in Atlanta, Macon, and surrounding counties. Across the Florida Panhandle and Big Bend, including Tallahassee and Dothan, lows near 28°F are expected before sunrise. Coastal Carolinas, including Myrtle Beach and Wilmington, will dip to around 29°F between 2 a.m. and 10 a.m.
Officials warn that sensitive vegetation may not survive the freeze, and exposed pipes could burst. Residents should cover plants, bring pets indoors, and allow faucets to drip overnight.
Freeze warnings remain in effect through mid-morning Wednesday, and additional cold weather advisories could follow if temperatures trend lower.
