Huntsville, AL – A freeze warning is in effect for northern and central Alabama from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. CDT Friday, with temperatures expected to drop as low as 27°F in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Huntsville and Birmingham, the warning covers multiple counties, including Madison, Morgan, Limestone, Cullman, Jefferson, Tuscaloosa, and Shelby. Residents should prepare for potentially damaging cold conditions overnight.
The freezing temperatures pose a threat to crops, sensitive vegetation, and outdoor plumbing. Experts recommend covering plants, bringing potted vegetation indoors, and insulating outdoor pipes to prevent damage. Homeowners with in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover exposed pipes to avoid freezing.
Major cities, including Huntsville, Birmingham, and Tuscaloosa, will experience sub-freezing temperatures, with lows between 27°F and 31°F. This cold snap follows a stretch of mild weather, increasing the risk of damage to early-blooming plants.
The freeze warning will remain in effect until 8 a.m. for northern Alabama and 9 a.m. for central parts of the state. Residents are urged to take necessary precautions Thursday evening to protect plants and plumbing from the cold.
