Montgomery, Ala. – Drivers across central and southeast Alabama should brace for severely reduced visibility during the Thursday morning commute as dense fog blankets the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect until 9 a.m. CDT for 12 counties, including Montgomery, Dallas, Barbour, and Tallapoosa. Visibility has dropped to a quarter-mile or less in many areas, especially along U.S. 231, U.S. 82, and state routes near river valleys and low-lying terrain.
Cities impacted include Selma, Troy, Prattville, Eufaula, and Phenix City. The fog is particularly thick near bodies of water and rural roadways where sunlight takes longer to burn off moisture. Officials urge drivers to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and increase following distance to reduce crash risk.
This advisory affects key commuter corridors and school bus routes. Residents should allow extra time and avoid non-essential travel until conditions improve mid-morning.
Fog is expected to lift by 9 a.m., but another advisory is possible if conditions persist longer than expected.
