Birmingham, AL – A Flood Watch is in effect for northern and central Alabama from Saturday morning through late Saturday night as a significant rainfall event threatens the region. Forecasters predict widespread rainfall totals between 3 to 5 inches, with localized areas potentially exceeding 7 inches.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) offices in Birmingham and Huntsville, excessive rainfall is expected to cause flash flooding in flood-prone areas. Rivers, creeks, and streams could overflow their banks, leading to hazardous conditions in low-lying and urban areas.

The affected areas include Fayette, Lamar, Marion, Walker, Winston, Lauderdale, Colbert, Franklin, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Morgan, Marshall, Jackson, DeKalb, and Cullman counties in Alabama, as well as Moore, Lincoln, and Franklin counties in Tennessee.

Officials warn that repeated rounds of thunderstorms will contribute to rising water levels. Motorists are urged to avoid flooded roadways and seek alternate routes when necessary. Residents in flood-prone areas should stay vigilant and be prepared to take action if conditions worsen.

The Flood Watch remains in effect from 7 a.m. Saturday until 1 a.m. Sunday. For updates, visit weather.gov and monitor local alerts.
