Huntsville, AL – A widespread flood watch is in effect for north Alabama through 7 p.m. Sunday as a powerful storm system moves into the Tennessee Valley region.

According to the National Weather Service Huntsville, rainfall between 2 to 4 inches is expected, with isolated areas possibly receiving more than 5 inches. The alert, issued Saturday afternoon, covers cities including Huntsville, Florence, Russellville, Cullman, Fort Payne, and parts of southern middle Tennessee such as Fayetteville and Sewanee.

Officials warn the heavy rainfall may lead to hazardous road conditions, localized flooding, and rapid rises in rivers, creeks, and streams. Low-lying areas and terrain-prone zones are especially vulnerable to flooding.

Residents are advised to avoid driving through flooded roads or bypassing barricades. Authorities recommend moving to higher ground if flash flood warnings are issued. Staying informed through local media and weather alerts is strongly encouraged.

The storm system is expected to intensify late Saturday evening and continue into Sunday afternoon. While early April rainfall is not uncommon for the region, meteorologists say the volume and rate of precipitation could exceed typical spring levels.
