Birmingham, Alabama – Fires could ignite and spread quickly across Central Alabama within hours Saturday as dry air and gusty winds combine to create dangerous conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, a Fire Weather Watch is in effect from 7 a.m. through 7 p.m. Saturday for more than 30 counties, including Jefferson, Tuscaloosa, Montgomery, and Lee. Northeast winds will range from 10 to 15 mph, with gusts reaching 30 mph, while relative humidity drops as low as 19 percent.
These conditions sharply increase the risk of fast-moving grass and brush fires, especially along major corridors like I-65, I-20/59, and rural roadways where dry vegetation is abundant. Cities including Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Auburn, and Selma could see rapid fire spread if ignition occurs, putting homes, power lines, and wooded areas at risk.
Emergency officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, including debris piles and campfires. Even small sparks from equipment or vehicles can trigger fires under these conditions. Residents should secure trailer chains, avoid parking on dry grass, and keep water sources nearby.
The threat will persist through Saturday evening, and additional warnings, including possible Red Flag alerts, could be issued as conditions evolve.
