Birmingham, AL – Residents across Central Alabama should prepare for a sharp temperature drop and dangerously cold conditions late Sunday as a Cold Weather Advisory goes into effect across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, Saturday will remain relatively mild, though cloud cover will increase throughout the day. Light rain is expected Saturday night, followed by the arrival of much colder air early Sunday morning. Breezy conditions will make it feel significantly colder throughout the day.
By Sunday night, forecasters warn of very cold wind chills and a hard freeze, with temperatures dropping into the teens to around 20 degrees by early Monday morning. Wind chill values are expected to fall into the single digits to low teens, especially across northern and western parts of Central Alabama.
The Cold Weather Advisory includes Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Anniston, Gadsden, Montgomery, Selma, and Auburn, along with surrounding communities. Officials warn that prolonged exposure to cold conditions could be dangerous without proper precautions.
Residents are urged to protect people, pets, plants, and pipes, as freezing temperatures could lead to burst plumbing and pose health risks for vulnerable populations. Outdoor pets should be brought indoors, and those using space heaters are reminded to follow fire safety guidelines.
While daytime temperatures on Sunday will struggle to recover, conditions should gradually improve by Monday as winds ease and sunshine returns.
Local officials encourage residents to check on elderly neighbors and ensure proper heating sources are available ahead of the coldest overnight period.
