Cullman County, AL – A Mississippi woman was airlifted to a Birmingham hospital Sunday evening after a dramatic boat fire on Lewis Smith Lake left one person injured and prompted a rapid emergency response.

Authorities say the fire broke out around 6 p.m. Sunday as a 20-foot Runabout vessel with four people aboard suddenly caught fire near the Trident Marina by Crane Hill. Witnesses reported that the passengers, including 30-year-old Katherine E. Goodwin of Florence, Miss., dove into the water to escape the burning craft.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), Goodwin suffered injuries and was airlifted to the University of Alabama (UAB) Birmingham Hospital for medical treatment. The operator, Cody Curry, 40, of Florence, Miss., and two other 18-year-old passengers were not injured during the incident.

ALEA’s Marine Patrol Division responded to the scene to secure the area and assist those involved. Troopers report the vessel fire occurred north of Trident Marina, a popular boating and fishing destination on Lewis Smith Lake.

Authorities have not yet released details on what allegedly caused the fire, and an investigation is ongoing. As of Monday morning, no further information was available regarding the condition of the injured passenger or the potential cause behind the single-vessel incident.

According to ALEA, the Marine Patrol Division continues to investigate the incident and urges boaters to exercise caution and observe all safety regulations while on Alabama’s waterways this summer.
