Mobile, Alabama – Beachgoers along Alabama’s Gulf Coast and the Florida Panhandle are facing a high risk of life-threatening rip currents through Monday afternoon, with red flags already flying at multiple popular beaches.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Birmingham and Mobile, high surf and strong currents have prompted red flag advisories from Dauphin Island to Destin, including Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Pensacola Beach, Navarre Beach, and Okaloosa Island. The high risk is expected to ease into moderate levels by Tuesday, but swimmers are being urged to stay out of the water today.
Officials warn that dangerous currents can overpower even experienced swimmers, and many rescues in recent years have involved visitors underestimating surf conditions. Lifeguards in Baldwin and Escambia counties have already reported several near-misses this weekend.
Red flags indicate water conditions are too hazardous for swimming. Those heading to the beach are advised to check local advisories, avoid entering the Gulf, and supervise children closely near the surf zone.
Conditions are expected to improve by midweek, but until then, NWS officials stress the importance of heeding warnings. Additional rip current statements could be issued if conditions deteriorate again.
