Akutan, Alaska – A light earthquake struck offshore near the Aleutian chain within the past hour, registering a magnitude 3.0 and prompting monitoring across southwest Alaska, though no immediate damage or disruptions have been reported.

According to the Alaska Earthquake Center, the quake occurred at 10:58 a.m. AKDT Sunday about 132 kilometers east-southeast of Akutan at a depth of 4.8 kilometers. The event was automatically detected and reviewed, with no tsunami threat issued and no alerts for coastal evacuation.

The epicenter sits in a seismically active stretch of the Aleutians, where frequent low-magnitude earthquakes occur due to tectonic plate movement along the Pacific Ring of Fire. Communities including Unalaska and Dutch Harbor may not have felt noticeable shaking given the relatively low magnitude and offshore location.

State and local agencies, including Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, have not reported any impacts to roads, ports, or utilities. Air and marine traffic remain unaffected.

Residents are encouraged to review earthquake preparedness plans, secure loose household items, and ensure emergency kits are accessible in case of stronger activity. While this event remains minor, aftershocks or additional seismic movement can follow in active zones.

Monitoring will continue through the day, with updates issued if seismic activity increases or conditions change.
