AKHIOK, Alaska – A light magnitude 2.5 earthquake struck late Sunday about 101 kilometers west of Akhiok, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake occurred around 8:06 p.m. local time and was recorded at a depth of zero kilometers, indicating a shallow event off Alaska’s southern coast.

According to the USGS, no damage or injuries were reported and no felt reports have been submitted as of Sunday night. The quake was part of ongoing minor seismic activity common across the Kodiak Island region, an area that sits along the tectonically active Pacific Ring of Fire.

Residents in coastal communities from Larsen Bay to Karluk were unlikely to have felt the shaking, though emergency managers continue to monitor the area for any additional activity. The Alaska Earthquake Center reports that small offshore quakes like this are frequent and rarely cause concern but serve as a reminder to stay prepared for stronger events.

No tsunami warnings or advisories were issued following the tremor, and monitoring will continue through the week as part of routine seismic tracking.
