Phoenix, AZ – The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) has issued an Ozone High Pollution Advisory for Maricopa County, including the Phoenix metro area, effective through Thursday.
The advisory warns residents of forecasted weather conditions that, in combination with existing ozone levels, could result in local 8-hour ozone concentrations reaching hazardous levels. These elevated ozone levels may pose significant health risks, particularly for children, older adults, and individuals with respiratory issues.
According to the ADEQ, residents are advised to reduce physical activity, especially outdoors, and take steps to minimize air pollution. The department recommends carpooling, telecommuting, or using public transportation to reduce emissions. Additionally, the use of gasoline-powered equipment should be limited and conducted later in the day to help mitigate pollution levels.
Ozone, a common air contaminant, can cause breathing difficulties and worsen asthma and other respiratory conditions. The advisory emphasizes that health risks are expected to increase as air quality continues to deteriorate. For more details on the advisory, the public is encouraged to visit the ADEQ website or contact the department directly at 602-771-2300.
